Comfort Colors 1717 vs Bella+Canvas 3001: Relaxed or Retail-Style Fit?

Comfort Colors 1717 vs Bella+Canvas 3001: Relaxed or Retail-Style Fit?

Your design is ready, but what shirt should you put it on? If you’re choosing between the Comfort Colors 1717 and Bella+Canvas 3001, the biggest difference is the kind of T-shirt you want people to wear.

The Comfort Colors 1717 is the relaxed, garment-dyed choice with a more substantial, lived-in feel. The Bella+Canvas 3001 is a lighter jersey tee with a retail fit and a cleaner, more contemporary silhouette. Neither is better for every order. Choose based on the look you want, the people wearing the shirts and the specific color you plan to print.

Still deciding among several shirts? Our guide to the best shirts for custom printing compares these with Gildan, too. Here, we’ll focus on what it’s like to choose between the 1717 and 3001 for your design.

Which one feels looser?

The Comfort Colors 1717 is the looser-fitting direction. Comfort Colors describes it as a relaxed fit, while Bella+Canvas describes the 3001 as a retail fit. If you prefer more ease in the silhouette, start by looking at the 1717. If you prefer a retail-style shape, look at the 3001.

That does not mean everyone should size up in the 3001. Fit depends on the shirt’s actual measurements and on how the wearer wants it to look. An XL in one style should not automatically be treated as the same fit as an XL in the other.

How do the fabric and finish change the look?

The 1717 is a garment-dyed shirt. Its finish helps give it the lived-in character many people want for casual or vintage-inspired apparel. But not every 1717 color looks identical: Comfort Colors describes its pigment-dyed colors as having a vintage appearance, while reactive-dyed colors have a more traditional dyed appearance while retaining softness. If a particular washed look is important to your design, choose the specific shirt color with that in mind.

The 3001 is a lighter, 4.2 oz jersey tee. Its primary fabrication is Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton. Fabric content can vary by color; for example, Bella+Canvas lists Ash as 99% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton and 1% polyester. Check the chosen color’s details rather than assuming every 3001 is identical.

Neither feel tells the whole story on its own. A more substantial, relaxed shirt may be just right for one design; a lighter retail-fit shirt may be exactly right for another. If all-day feel is your main concern, our most comfortable T-shirts for custom printing guide looks at that question across more blanks.

Will the same size fit the same way?

Don’t order by size letter alone. The two shirts have different fits, and a labeled XL does not promise the same width, length or shape.

For a concrete starting point, Bella+Canvas lists the 3001 XL garment at 24 inches across the chest and 31 inches in body length. Those are measurements of the shirt, not the wearer’s body. Size availability can also vary by color.

Before collecting sizes for a team, business or event, settle on the shirt style and color, then use that style’s current size chart. If you switch blanks after people have submitted their sizes, check the measurements again. For an order where fit is especially important, compare the garment measurements carefully before finalizing sizes.

Comfort Colors says its garments are pre-shrunk during garment dyeing and washing for “almost no shrinkage at home.” That isn’t a promise of zero shrinkage, and it’s no substitute for choosing the fit you want at the outset.

How might your design look on each shirt?

Picture the entire finished shirt, not just the artwork.

On the 1717, the relaxed shape and garment-dyed color can be part of the design’s personality. A graphic meant to feel casual or lived-in may suit that direction. If the precise washed appearance matters, pay attention to whether your selected color is pigment-dyed or reactive-dyed.

On the 3001, the lighter fabric and retail fit give you a different starting point: a cleaner, more contemporary T-shirt silhouette. That may suit artwork you want presented on a lighter-feeling tee.

In either case, shirt color, artwork color and placement affect the overall result. Bring those choices into the conversation before deciding how to print the design; the blank alone doesn’t determine the finished print’s appearance.

Which shirt makes sense for your order?

Consider the Comfort Colors 1717 if you want a relaxed fit, a more substantial feel and garment-dyed character. It’s a direction worth exploring for casual merchandise or a vintage-inspired design.

Consider the Bella+Canvas 3001 if you want a lighter tee with a retail fit. It’s a direction worth exploring for an event, staff apparel or a design where that silhouette is part of the goal.
